JU Drops Football Program
After 22 years of play the Jacksonville University Dolphins football team will no longer suit up. Jacksonville University was the only D1 program offering a football program in Jacksonville, Florida. With the Dolphins no longer playing the only College football team remaining is the Edward Waters College Tigers who currently are at the NAIA level. EWC is working on potentially moving up to the D2 level within the next few years however.
JU’s decision to cancel football was largely due to high cost to maintain the program. Athletic Director Alex Ricker-Gilbert said “When you consider all that we commit to coaching, recruiting, advising, facilities, conditioning, nutrition, and academic counseling, it’s clear the resources required to support our football program outweigh the benefits to the overall Athletics Department and the University.”
While JU is dropping their football program Edward Waters College the only College football team left in town is investing millions of city gifted funds into their new “community field” set to launch this fall.
Jacksonville University is offering all of their current football players a full ride scholarship to go towards finishing their Degrees.
